Why I Love Rainy Weather

We here in Mississippi have had about six weeks of rain.  While everybody was bemoaning this, I was reveling in it.  I love rainy weather.  I love the sound of rain,  I love the feel of rain and I love the scent of rain. I love to hear the sound the rain makes on tree leaves, and the sound it makes falling on the deck outside... I love all types of rain--from torrential downpours to fine misty drizzle,
I have kept this fact to myself, because my friends look at me like I'm crazy when I mention it.
We have had a couple of weeks of sunshine and then today the skies turned gray, a gentle breeze began to blow and this afternoon the rain started.  I was quietly ecstatic.
Since I'm a very analytical person I have been thinking of why I love rainy weather so much.
After thinking about it a great deal, I have come to this conclusion...
I grew up in a log house that my ggggrandfather built when he moved his family to Mississippi.  The house had a tin roof and a large front porch.   When the weather was stormy I would go out on the front porch, which faced the east, take the settee and two matching chairs and turn them upside down with their bottoms facing the outside of the porch.  I would then pull out two old quilts and cover the chairs and settee with them.  I would also take another old quilt and pillow and place them inside my "snuggy bug."  I would crawl in there with my book or magazine and maybe the cat if I could coax her into it.
I would lie in there with my back to the old logs and if I had made my nest close to the only window that was on the  front porch, I could hear Mama puttering around in the kitchen.
I would read my book or magazine and every so often lift the quilt up to peak out at the weather.  It's hard to express the feeling of peace, safety, sanity and security that this made me feel.  Outside my little nest the  weather could be raging, but I was in a nest in a safe place that had been built many many years ago with my back to those ancient logs...and my Mama was inside.
So even these many years later when it rains or the skys turn gray, I feel peaceful.
If I'm anxious or stressed, I close my eyes and remember..........

What a wonderful memory to have! You wrote it so well that I could picture you in your cozy place on the porch. I love the rain, too, and people give me the same reaction.

A very, very sweet post and you are so fortunate to have such warm memories. Is the house still there? I like the rain, too, but we get too many tornado watches/warnings when it rains for me to love it THAT much.

thank yawl. no the house is not still there, when my Mama and uncle moved to town about 10 years ago and she sold the farm, because it was passing out of ancestral hands we tore it down and sold the logs...it was falling down anyway...and because we were gone, we wanted it gone as well...does that make sense?

I am with you about rain. Love rainy days. And people think I'm from Mars because of it.

Beautifully written post on an important topic in our lives : Rain. Without rain there's no food, no water, no clean atmosphere. Where I live we have very few rain and that makes our life miserable.
I greatly enjoyed reading about your little nest on the front porch.

Hi! So nice to meet you! Thanks for coming by to visit me and for introducing yourself. I have to read more of your posts, but I love this one on rainy days. I love rain also! Living in south Florida, we don't get cozy winters, so rainy days/nights satisfy that feeling.

I like the things you have written on your profile. We are the same age too! I'll visit again so I can get to know you better. I always love to make new blogging friends!!
